Launched by The Beatles’ first appearance on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ in 1964 the British Invasion brought an exciting new sound the latest fashions and moppish hairstyles that made parents cringe. A wave of British bands came Stateside and dominated the American pop charts setting the tone for an entire generation. Now for the first time a dynamic collection of top groups from that era have joined together in rousing celebration of the infectious and uplifting music that continues its popularity today. Recorded as a PBS special this concert features nine legendary acts performing some of the best rock music ever recorded.

BAHAREN PHIR BHI AAYENGI is on one hand a classic love triangle and on the other the triumph of truth. Amita (Mala Sinha) the editor of a newspaper fires her young reporter Jiten (Dharmendra) for his story about some corrupt but influential builders only to discover that his report is true. She hires him back and secretly falls in love with him but finds out that Jiten is in love with her own younger sister Sunita (Tanuja). Meanwhile the pressure from the board of directors to fire Jiten mounts as his stories get too uncomfortably close to the truth… One of Guru Dutt’s last films Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi was under production when he died in 1964 and his brother Atma Ram completed the film casting Dharmendra in Guru Dutt’s place. Guru Dutt had initially asked S.D. Burman to compose the music for the film subsequently replacing him with O.P. Nayyar. (Interestingly the Kishore Kumar solo Yeh Dil No Hota Bechara from Jewel Thief was rejected as the theme song for his film!). Apart from sensitive performances by Dharmendra Mala Sinha and Tanuja the film’s music is one of O.P. Nayyar’s best scores with such hits as Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (Mahendra Kapoor) Aap Ke Haseen (Mohd. Rafi) & Who Hans Ke Mile Humse often rated as one of Asha Bhonsle’s 10 best songs.

Writer/director Michael Haneke delivers a masterpiece of unsettlement with Hidden (Cache). Life seems perfect for Georges (Daniel Auteuil) and Anne (Juliette Binoche) a bourgeois Parisian couple who live in a comfortable home with their adolescent son Pierrot (Lester Makedonsky). But when an anonymous videotape turns up on their doorstep showing their house under surveillance from across the street their calm life begins to spiral out of control. Subsequent videotapes arrive accompanied by mysterious drawings and gradually Georges becomes convinced that he’s being tormented by a figure from his past. But when he confronts him the man assures Georges he is innocent. A growing sense of guilt begins to rise in Georges as he recalls his less-than-angelic childhood yet for some reason he’s unable to be completely honest with Anne. Soon their happy home is an emotional battleground leading to a climax that is breathtaking in its ferocity and ambiguousness. Though Haneke’s film works first and foremost as an insidious thriller it is also a powerful commentary on the urban paranoia and racism that continue to permeate modern society. Without using a score and keeping his camera detached and static Haneke nonetheless establishes a nearly unbearable level of tension. Not for the squeamish Hidden remains a work of menacing brilliance and was the winner of the Best Director award at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.
