With their previous three releases Spock’s Beard Feel Euphoria and Octane Spock’s Beard has proved that despite the departure of Neal Morse they remain one of the best prog bands on the scene. Since Morse’s exit the Californian quartet has continued to seek new forms of expression with a focus on combining complex compositions with a more song orientated feel. When Daniel Defoe wrote his ‘Robinson Crusoe’ it was the moving story of a lonely shipwreck who after years of isolation discovers a cannibal on his island names him ‘Friday’ and teaches him the blessings of civilization. In Man Friday the basic elements of the story remain but emphasis has been shifted to Friday (Richard Roundtree) who ‘discovers’ and eventually comes to hate Crusoe (Peter O’Toole). The result is an exciting unusual and provocative film shot through with action as distrurbing as it is suspenseful. Its tension builds until in the climactic ending an age-old myth is exploded.

More than three decades after its controversial release it remains the most butchered debated and least-seen film of the Oscar-winning director’s entire career. Written by Polanski and his old partner Gerard Brach What? is a mordant absurdist comedy made in the spirit of Roger Vadim and Terry Southern and loosely based on the themes of Alice in Wonderland and Henry James. The film is a rambling shaggy dog story about the sexual indignities that befall Nancy (Sydney Rome) a winsome young American hippy hitchhiking through Europe. After escaping a farcical rape attempt in the back of a truck she soon finds herself stranded in the hothouse atmosphere of a remote Italian villa inhabited by a band of decadent lecherous grotesques – the main three are played by Marcello Mastrioanni Hugh Griffith and Polanski himself. Since it’s 1972 release the film has attracted a cult following and a modicum of critical notice.
